Cold Late Season Storm To Affect Sierra Nevada Range With Heavy Snowfall Friday into Saturday; Winter Storm Warning Issued

National Weather Force has issued a Winter Storm Warning effective Friday into Saturday for the Sierra Nevada, along with a Winter Weather Advisory for Carson City, NV southward along 395 to near Bishop, CA so read on for details …

A cold late season storm is dropping down, affecting the Susanville areas with light snow at the time of this article release.  It will gain strength and finally start affecting areas south of there Friday, continuing into Saturday.  This system is a last hoo-ha to get some more snowfall on the Sierra Nevada Range, which can help the water supply some.   It’ll melt pretty fast next week due to the higher sun angle, but it is welcomed.  Average 4-6 inches of snowfall is in my forecast from my models, with areas in the medium elevation being 6-12, higher elevations seeing isolated 12+ inches.  Therefore, the range is under my Winter Storm Warning.

Drier low level conditions along with the precipitation will bring the snow-levels lower, affecting areas in the Carson City forecast area southward along Highway 395 to just before Bishop with snowfall.  If you are planning to travel along Highway 395, prepare for treacherous conditions during this event.  I’d advise alternative routes if possible.  The area therefore from Carson City, NV to Bishop, CA is under my Winter Weather Advisory.

As for areas in the metros further west, some rain and storm activity could make it to near the Sacramento forecast areas, probably north and east of the main metro zones however.  So… the focus of this system is for the snow event to come further east.
